Fred Astle - Key Note Speaker
As a local Tainui fluent Māori speaker, Fred does more than just open hui gatherings and meetings with traditional karakia (prayer) and whaikorero (speeches). With nearly 25 years of Māori development experience, he is totally obsessed with the idea of adding value towards creating amazing Māori experiences that is highly effective and ultimately transformational. The essence of Fred’s foundations is imbedded in him growing up in Pukekohe in the heart of Te Puaha o Waikato. Fred works with very large organisations and academic institutions such as VisionWest Community Trust as Tumu Whakarae Māori (Head of Māori Development) and University of Auckland, Faculty of Medicines, Surgical and Translational Research (STaR Centre) as Director of Kaupapa Māori. Fred knows from firsthand experience the complexities of applying kaupapa Māori or a Māori platform in a mainstream context through working with large District Health Board’s, Government Departments such as NZQA, IRD, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Oranga Tamariki various health and education providers. However, it is also his passion for Māori health research that propels him to providing a more researched, experiential and tikanga informed solutions that seeks to enhance an organisations or institutions core mandate, investment plan, growth strategy and future aspirations for Maori. In the last 19 years Fred has spoken at various national and international health conferences and is a regular guest lecturer in the Treaty of Waitangi in Social Services for University of Auckland Faculty of Social Work, Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Practice and is currently contributing to several research articles. However, Fred strongly believes that for him personally the “more I learn, the more I’m effective!” Fred’s experience in Māori leadership and previous Post Graduate Māori leadership studies has challenged him towards more comprehensive leadership research hence his current thesis on Māori transformational leadership in a mainstream context. His work also compelled him to establish Korowai Solutions, a Māori consultancy company that works on the premise of enhancing and celebrating organisational mana, aspirations and success.
